支道林、許、謝盛德，共集王家。謝顧謂諸人：“今日可謂彥會，時既不可留，此集固亦難常。當共言詠，以寫其懷。”許便問主人有莊子不？正得漁父壹篇。謝看題，便各使四坐通。支道林先通，作七百許語，敘致精麗，才藻奇拔，眾鹹稱善。於是四坐各言懷畢。謝問曰：“卿等盡不？”皆曰：“今日之言，少不自竭。”謝後粗難，因自敘其意，作萬余語，才峰秀逸。既自難幹，加意氣擬托，蕭然自得，四坐莫不厭心。支謂謝曰：“君壹往奔詣，故復自佳耳。”
